History of Berthold ND |
|
Berthold's name came secondhand, from Bartholomew Berthold of St. Louis,
after whom Fort Berthold was named. The village was the nearest railway
point to the post, only 40 miles from the nearest corner before the boundaries
of the reservations were shifted. The official beginning of Berthold
was in April 1900.
The city about 25 miles west of Minot once boasted a population of about 800 in addition to a variety of business places. In the city in the early years there was a hotel, with a bar and pool room, four big stores, a mortician, two banks, two drug stores and a theater, a post office was added in December of 1900. Frederick C. Walther, known as the father of Berthold, arrived to settle on a homestead adjoining the town site. He built the first store, aided in getting the first school, railroad station, and donated lots for a city park, which still bears his name. Mr. Walther also donated land for a cemetery, located one-half mile west of Berthold. It was named Wildrose Cemetery for a flower that bloomed in profusion on the unmarked prairies. Berthold became an official village in 1902, with the first board members being John Beckwar, J.J. Manning, and O.C. Stevenson. Charles Pratt was elected constable. The Berthold School District was organized in June of 1902. For a short time school was held in the train depot, before the one room school was built on the site of the old school. School opened on Oct. 15th, 1902 with W.I. Meyers as the first teacher. In 1905 a four-room brick school was built and in 1910 four more rooms were added to the upper story. In 1926 the gymnasium was added and was the best of its kind at the time. After 50 years of service, a new school was built in 1963. In 1902 the first Berthold Tribune was published and until December 31, 1984, four different editors were involved. The ancient linotype and printing press were the last in use and repairs were no longer available. The printing press is now located in Minot at the pioneer village at the fair grounds. Dr. Albert Hillis was Berthold's first doctor and was succeeded in 1904 by Dr. S.J. Hillis, who was also the first mayor of Berthold. The first telephone office was opened in 1904 with Carrie Nelson as the first telephone office operator, in 1912 the Farmers Telephone Co. office was organized, it cost $18.00 a year for use of your telephone and this fee was paid every fall. In 1902 the Congregational Church was built. This church was added in 1959. In 1906 the Zion Lutheran Church was built, in 1960 the educational building was added and in 1974 a new brick church building was erected. The St. Ann's Catholic Church was built in 1907. Their present church was built in 1968. The Baptist Church was built at Lone Tree in1909. In 1959 the members of the church voted to relocate to Berthold and they held their first service in Berthold in 1960. In 1949 streetlights were added and in 1959 a city hall was built. In 1959 a fire hall was also built and a water project in 1960. In 1902 the post office was booming and two clerks were hired, Edna Pond Black and Berdie Thomson Black. The post office also started selling money orders that year. Life in Berthold was always good and the town grew and prospered, declined some and prospered again. Berthold made the headlines in newspapers across the nation on Sept. 7, 1967 when burglars snuck into town in the middle of the night. They broke into the post office, Bud's store, Roise Implement, the Farmers Union Oil, Farmers Elevator, and GTA Elevator. Not only did they steal a lot, they left quite a mess. The safe at the post office had the door peeled off and they scattered records, papers and stamps. There are many people in 1999 who are still living on and working the land that was homesteaded by their fathers, mothers, and grandparents. Berthold now boasts over twenty-three businesses prospering in the area. There is a housing shortage and new lots are being developed, our school is full, and Main Street is alive and well. In the year 2000 Berthold turned100 years old. |
